A family guide to reviewing the year that was and envisioning the year ahead

End of Year Family Reflection: Closing the Year with Gratitude and Intention

December is a season of both looking back and looking forward. For families who want to live intentionally — who want their family culture to be shaped by their values rather than by default — the end of year reflection is one of the most important practices you can build.

The Family Year-End Conversation

Gather the family — all ages, all members present — and work through these questions together:

Looking Back:

  • What is one thing we did this year that we are most proud of?
  • What challenge did we face this year that made us stronger?
  • Who supported us this year that we should thank?
  • What is one way we grew as a family?

Looking Forward:

  • What is one thing we want to do differently next year?
  • What is one adventure we want to have together?
  • What is one goal we want to pursue as a family?
  • What is one person or community we want to serve?

Creating a Family Gratitude List

Have each family member contribute ten things they are grateful for from the past year. Compile them into a family gratitude list and read them aloud together. The practice of named gratitude reorients the family's attention toward abundance rather than scarcity.

The Family Letter

Consider writing a family letter — a narrative of your year's highlights, challenges, and growth — to be shared with extended family or preserved in a family album. This practice creates a living family history that children will treasure as adults.

Closing the Year in Prayer

Gather as a family in prayer at the transition from the old year to the new. Thank God for what was given, release what was hard, and ask for guidance for what lies ahead. The family that prays together at life's transitions builds a spiritual resilience that sustains through any season.
