A Pastor's Sabbath: Essential, Not Optional

The Myth of the Unstoppable Pastor

There is a subtle, dangerous idolatry in the modern church that rewards the busy pastor and ignores the burnt-out one. We preach about the Sabbath, yet we rarely practice it. Exhaustion is not a badge of honor; it is a sign that we have forgotten who is actually in control of the Church.

Returning to Rhythms

God created the Sabbath not as a suggestion, but as a boundary. In Exodus 20, the commandment to rest is tethered to the very identity of the Creator. When we rest, we declare that the work belongs to God.

Practical Steps to Sabbath

  • Hard Boundaries: No emails, no texts, no planning on your day off.
  • Delight in Creation: Find activities that recharge your soul, not just your schedule.
  • Trust God's Sovereignty: Believe that the church will survive 24 hours without your immediate input.

Your ministry is a marathon, not a sprint. If you burn out, you do not help your congregation; you leave them confused and wounded. Prioritize your soul so that your service remains sustainable for years to come.
