A conversation with three Black women executives on the realities of senior leadership

Interview: Navigating the C-Suite as a Black Woman

We gathered three Black women C-suite executives across different industries for a frank conversation about what it really takes.

What was the moment you knew you had truly arrived in senior leadership?

Angela (CFO, Healthcare): When I stopped second-guessing whether I belonged. That took longer than I would like to admit — well into my second year as CFO. The external validation came years before the internal shift.

Maya (COO, Tech): When the younger Black women in my company started reaching out for coffee. When you become the person people are looking up to, something shifts in how you carry yourself.

Dominique (CMO, Retail): Honestly, I am not sure I ever fully 'arrived.' I still walk into certain rooms and feel the weight of being the only one. But I've learned to turn that weight into fuel instead of letting it be a barrier.

What is the advice you wish someone had given you earlier?

Angela: Find your sponsors early. I spent too many years collecting mentors and not enough time building relationships with people who could actually open doors.

Maya: Learn to speak the language of the boardroom without losing your own voice. You can be fluent in corporate strategy and still be authentically yourself. The code-switching I did early in my career was exhausting and unnecessary.

Dominique: Your wellness is not separate from your leadership. I burned out at 38, spent six months recovering, and rebuilt my career on a foundation that included real boundaries. I lead better now. Period.

What do you want the next generation of Black women executives to know?

Angela, Maya, and Dominique (in unison): You are not here by accident. Lead like you know it.
